Daniel Hallahan

Daniel P. Hallahan is Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia and one of the most widely cited scholars in learning disabilities and special education. His research spans students with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, intellectual disabilities, deafness, and blindness, along with the epidemiology of disability categories. His work developing cognitive and metacognitive strategy instruction, including self-monitoring, helped make these approaches standard classroom practice worldwide. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, 40 book chapters, and 18 books, several translated into Arabic, Korean, Lithuanian, German, and Spanish. He has secured over $7 million in grants, led the UVA Learning Disabilities Research Institute, directed the Center of Minority Research in Special Education, and served as President of the Council for Exceptional Children's Division for Learning Disabilities. In 2026, he was named a Finalist for the King Salman International Award for Disability Research.
