Heinz Wiendl

Neuroimmunology

Professor Heinz Wiendl studied medicine in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States, graduating in 1996, and subsequently built an internationally recognized career in neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis (MS). After research positions in Nürnberg, at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in Tübingen, he became head of the MS clinical research group in Würzburg (2005), later chairing leading neurology departments in Münster (from 2010, department head from 2013) and, since October 2024, serving as Director of the Department of Neurology and Neurophysiology at the University Medical Center Freiburg. His research focuses on inflammatory neurodegeneration, immune regulation, and MS therapy monitoring. He has received multiple honors, including two Sobek Awards (2004, 2015), fellowships of the American and European Academies of Neurology (2019), and international honorary professorships. Professor Wiendl is President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology and spokesperson of the German MS Competence Network (KKNMS), has coordinated over 40 phase I–IV clinical trials, founded the federally funded Body and Brain Institute, and has authored more than 850 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, with approximately 4,800 citations per year (past five years), (H-index 117).
