Wael Sawan

Chief Executive Officer of Shell since January 2023. Born in Beirut, he holds Lebanese and Canadian citizenship. He joined Shell in 1997 and has spent his entire career there, moving through operational and commercial roles across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America, and leading offshore drilling in Qatar and the company’s business in Nigeria. He then took charge of the Upstream business, and afterwards of Integrated Gas and Renewables and Energy Solutions, before his appointment as chief executive. His tenure has been marked by refocusing the company on liquefied natural gas, capital discipline and shareholder returns, and by a review of the pace of its renewable investments. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from McGill University and an MBA from Harvard University.
