Jonathan Symonds

Chair

Jonathan Symonds has chaired the board of GSK since September 2019, bringing international financial, life sciences and governance experience. He was previously chairman of HSBC Bank plc, chief financial officer of Novartis, a partner and managing director at Goldman Sachs, chief financial officer of AstraZeneca, where he worked on the 1999 merger that created the company, and a partner at KPMG. He was an independent non-executive director of HSBC Holdings from 2014 to 2020, chairing its group audit committee and serving as deputy group chairman from 2018, and a non-executive director of Genomics England from 2013 to 2025. In 2021 he co-chaired, with Professor Sir John Bell, the preparation of the UK Life Sciences Vision. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and an honorary fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
