Jim Campbell

Professor of Practice, Health Workforce

Jim Campbell spent 12 years at the World Health Organization as Director of its Health Workforce Department and as Executive Director of the Global Health Workforce Alliance. There he oversaw the Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health: Workforce 2030, adopted by the Sixty-ninth World Health Assembly, supported the UN Secretary-General's High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth, and led the WHO Academy's conceptual development. Before that he founded and directed a not-for-profit health research institute for eight years, after a decade in conflict and humanitarian settings in Africa, Asia and Europe. His publications include A Universal Truth: No Health Without a Workforce and the 2011 and 2014 editions of The State of the World's Midwifery. He has worked with the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Africa CDC, the World Bank and national governments on health workforce education, employment, migration and governance. He joined King's College London in April 2026 in the School of Life Course and Population Sciences, working on workforce science and the human-AI economy of health and care.
