Ricardo Baptista Leite

Ricardo Baptista Leite is a Portuguese physician trained in infectious diseases who has led HealthAI, the global agency for responsible artificial intelligence in health, since May 2023; the Geneva-based agency, formerly I-DAIR, helps governments build oversight capacity for AI in healthcare. Born in Toronto in 1980, he took his medical degree at NOVA University Lisbon in 2004, holds postgraduate qualifications from Johns Hopkins University, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Kennedy School, and is completing a doctorate in public health at Maastricht University. He has taught microbiology and parasitology at NOVA Medical School since 2007. He served four terms as a member of the Portuguese parliament from 2011 to 2023, sitting on the health and foreign affairs committees and as vice-president of his parliamentary group. He founded and presides over the UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health, which draws policymakers from 110 countries, chairs the board of the Harvard-Charite Global Health Policy Lab in Berlin and the Centre for Global Health at NOVA IMS in Lisbon, and was named an Obama Foundation Leader in 2024.
