Mohammed Alshehri
Lead, NCD Surveillance - Western Sector
Mohammed Alshehri leads non-communicable disease surveillance for the western sector at the Public Health Authority, known in Saudi Arabia as Weqaya. The authority was established on 2 March 2021, taking over from the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, and is the body responsible for monitoring, measuring, evaluating and countering public health risk factors in the Kingdom. Headquartered in Riyadh, it is organised into departments covering monitoring and preparedness, communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, health improvement and promotion, and environmental and community health, and it oversees the national public health laboratory, whose units work on infectious disease, antimicrobial resistance and tropical disease detection. Non-communicable disease surveillance of the kind he oversees tracks the prevalence and distribution of conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and obesity, and produces the evidence base for national screening, regulation and prevention programmes and for Saudi Arabia's reporting to international health bodies.
