Ged Byrne
Director of Global Health, Consultant Surgeon
Ged Byrne is a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon who directs global health at NHS England, after building its global health unit at Health Education England. He is professor of medical education at the University of Manchester, honorary professor of health sciences at Salford, and a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His NHS base is the Nightingale Centre and Genesis Prevention Centre at the University Hospital of South Manchester, and he has operated for over a decade at Spire Manchester. His international work began in October 1988 with a three-month student elective in Madras, now Chennai; he has since made close to a hundred working trips there. He helped establish the NHS Consortium for Global Health, created in 2018 to advise the government's Global Better Health Programme, a Prosperity Fund scheme in eight countries across the Indo-Pacific, Latin America and Africa. He co-chairs the Uganda UK Health Alliance, was interim chair of the Kenya UK Health Alliance, and is a trustee of Global Health Partnerships, formerly THET. He was appointed MBE in 2019 for services to global and medical education.
