Selwa A.F. Al-Hazzaa is a pioneering Saudi physician, scientist and technology entrepreneur recognised for her contributions to ophthalmology, artificial intelligence and the advancement of women in Saudi Arabia. She founded SDM in 2019 after earning a master of science in medical management and artificial intelligence from the University of Southern California. Under her leadership SDM became the first company in the region to use advanced automated retinal image analysis for the early diagnosis of chronic disease, and its growth was incubated and accelerated by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, KACST, The Garage, KAUST, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, the National Technology Development Program and the Research, Development and Innovation Authority. She was the only female physician to serve as attending ophthalmologist to the late King Fahd bin Abdulaziz, and in 2013 was appointed by royal decree as one of the first female members of the Shura Council.
