CEO, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust

Matthew Shaw is a consultant spinal surgeon who qualified in medicine at St George's, University of London, and trained and practised at St George's early in his career before moving into executive medicine. He was clinical director of the spinal unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital for seven years, then its medical director and later deputy chief executive and transformation director, and worked as a medical director in BUPA's UK health services. He joined Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust as medical director in March 2018 and became chief executive that December, leading the trust for seven and a half years in all, through the covid pandemic, the construction of its Children's Cancer Centre, a new five-year strategy and the adoption of artificial intelligence tools meant to cut the administrative load on clinicians. Great Ormond Street treats children with rare and complex conditions referred from across the United Kingdom. In November 2025 he was named chief executive of St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group, one of the largest NHS groups in England.
