George Margelis

Chief Technology Advisor, Ageing Australia

George Margelis is an Australian medical practitioner who has worked for three decades where clinical care meets technology. He trained first as an optometrist and later completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney, having started with computers in 1981 on a Sinclair ZX80. He was chief information officer of a private hospital group, joined Intel in 2005 as its healthcare lead, then moved to Care Innovations, the Intel-GE venture. In 2013 he became an adjunct associate professor at the University of Western Sydney, in its TeleHealth Research and Innovation Laboratory, and in 2014 he entered the IT in Aged Care Hall of Fame. He became a senior adviser to HIMSS in Australia in 2015 and helped launch the CXIO Network with HISA and the Australian Digital Health Agency in 2018, for which he is also a digital health adviser. From 2019 he was independent chair of the Aged Care Industry Information Technology Council, founded in 2007, until it merged into Ageing Australia in May 2024 and the Chief Technology Advisor post was created for him. He also sits on the board of a culturally and linguistically diverse aged care provider.
