Christopher Pettengell

Christopher Pettengell is recognised as an early pioneer in applying artificial intelligence to healthcare. He has authored more than fifty peer-reviewed publications at the intersection of artificial intelligence, clinical research and real-world evidence, among them several first-of-their-kind studies in AI-powered cancer staging, in learning health systems, and in the use of large language models to identify patients with rare diseases. He earned his MD from Oxford University, where he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for his research in HIV, and spent several years as a vascular surgeon at Imperial College London before leaving surgery for the emerging field of medical artificial intelligence with PENTAVERE, the healthcare technology company behind the DARWEN AI engine, which HEALWELL AI acquired in 2023. As Chief Medical Officer of HEALWELL AI he works on ethical, data-driven innovation in medicine. His work has been recognised with the Prix Galien, one of the highest international honours for scientific advances that transform healthcare and improve the human condition.
