Sustainability Engineer at NHC Innovation, the independent technology arm of the National Housing Company. He works on embedding sustainability standards into the residential communities the company develops, standards covering energy efficiency in the home, rationalising water use, the choice of building materials, and planning a neighbourhood to reduce dependence on the car. The importance of this role in large housing projects shows in the fact that a single design decision is repeated across thousands of units, so its effect on the energy bill and the carbon footprint accumulates to the scale of the project itself. Sustainability meets property technology in measuring a building's performance after handover through connected metering systems, rather than resting on estimates made at the design stage.
