William Thomas Winters was born in 1961, graduated from Colby College and earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He spent some twenty-three years at JPMorgan, rising to co-chief executive of the investment bank and helping steer it through the financial crisis. In 2010 the British government appointed him to the Independent Commission on Banking, which recommended ring-fencing retail banking operations, and in 2012 he founded the asset manager Renshaw Bay. He became group chief executive of Standard Chartered in June 2015 and led its restructuring and its renewed focus on the markets of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013.
