Anthony Rea

Senior Director of the Department of Earth System Data and Predictions

Anthony Rea is Senior Director of the Department of Earth Systems Data and Predictions at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which he rejoined in February 2026. The department supports an integrated international system for the observation, collection, processing and dissemination of meteorological, hydrological and related data and products for weather, climate and water applications. He earned a PhD from RMIT University in 2005, on deriving and applying meteorological observations from satellite data, and an Executive Master of Public Administration from the Australia and New Zealand School of Government in 2008. He worked at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology on satellite ingest and applications and became its Chief Data Officer in 2017. From late 2019 to 2023 he was Director of the WMO Infrastructure Department, contributing to the WMO Unified Data Policy, the Global Basic Observing Network and the Systematic Observations Financing Facility. He then worked as a private consultant on capacity development projects in the Pacific through the New Zealand MetService until rejoining WMO.
