Captain Turki Al Shehri is Managing Director of the National Maritime Academy in Saudi Arabia, where he leads the development of maritime training and education. His experience was formed in sub-sea diving, commercial shipping operations and the oil and gas sector, fields that all intersect in the Saudi maritime workforce. Maritime training is governed by an international convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, which prescribes what a seafarer must master before being licensed to work aboard ship, so aligning the academy’s programmes with those standards is a condition for its certificates to be recognised outside the Kingdom. This field is a direct output of Vision 2030 in the maritime sector: an expanding fleet and expanding ports need internationally certified Saudi officers and technicians.
