Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder

A microbiologist specialising in biosafety and biosecurity, and Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Biorisk Management International, which provides biorisk management training and consulting worldwide. He holds a PhD in microbiology and has close to three decades of international experience across biosafety, biosecurity, bioethics and executive management. He retired in 2019 as a Director General in the Government of Canada after service spanning Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Canadian Grain Commission, and earlier served as scientific director of the office of biosafety and environment at the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health in Winnipeg, managing containment level 4 laboratories over the course of his career. He is credited as the originator of the biorisk management concept and chaired the workshops that produced the first international biorisk management standard, later published as ISO 35001:2018. He works internationally as a trainer and ISO auditor, helping laboratories implement biorisk management systems.
