Matthew Porteus

Professor of Pediatrics

A physician-scientist in paediatric haematology and stem cell transplantation, and one of the founders of the genome editing field. He is the Sutardja Chuk Professor of Definitive and Curative Medicine at Stanford University, in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, and attends clinically at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, caring for children undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. He read history and science at Harvard University, then earned his MD and PhD at Stanford, trained in paediatrics and paediatric haematology/oncology at Boston Children's Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and carried out postdoctoral research with David Baltimore at MIT and Caltech. In 2003 he was the first to demonstrate precise gene editing in human cells using engineered nucleases. His research centres on correcting mutations through homologous recombination as a curative therapy for sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and primary immunodeficiencies. He is a scientific founder of CRISPR Therapeutics and an academic founder of Graphite Bio.
