Maksym Szewczuk is Security and Design Lead for Infrastructure at Bechtel Australia. Bechtel is an American engineering and construction house among the world’s largest infrastructure contractors, and integrating security into design there rests on a simple rule: what is overlooked at design stage is paid for twice, once in structural modification and once in the permanent guarding that compensates for the shortfall. The practice covers setting standoff distances and blast resistance in façades, separating vehicle routes from pedestrian ones, protecting critical utilities inside a facility, and designing lighting and sightlines so that fewer cameras and guards are needed, decisions taken alongside the architect rather than after them.
