Sowmiya Chawla

Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering

Sowmiya Chawla obtained her PhD from IIT Delhi in 2013, joined IIT (ISM) Dhanbad as an Assistant Professor in 2014 and has served as an Associate Professor since 2022. Her research interests include geotechnology for roads and railway tracks, ground improvement, reinforced walls and slopes, numerical modelling of soil behaviour, the discrete element method and geosynthetic applications. Her contributions to geotechnical and railway engineering have been recognised with the IEI Young Engineers Award in Civil Engineering from the Institution of Engineers India, the Young Geotechnical Engineer Award from the Indian Geotechnical Society Chennai Chapter, and an Outstanding Woman in Engineering award.
