Haitham Arabi is a breast and gynaecological pathologist and cytopathologist in the Department of Pathology at King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard Health Affairs, in Riyadh. His subspecialty depends on close correlation between cytology, histology and imaging, and much of his professional attention goes to digital pathology: the shift from reading glass slides at a microscope to scanning, storing and reporting whole-slide images. Implementing it well is a workflow and validation problem as much as a technical one, touching scanner throughput, storage, reporting systems and how pathologists are trained to trust a screen.
