Ehsan Ullah is honorary senior faculty in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Sciences at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. His field is the application of artificial intelligence to pathology, and in particular generative AI and foundation models for precision pathology. Foundation models trained on very large image collections can be adapted to many downstream diagnostic tasks with comparatively little labelled data, which changes both what is technically achievable in a pathology department and what validation and governance such systems require before clinical use.
