Mohamed Abdelrahim is President of the Saudi Arabia Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. ASHRAE is a global professional body that writes the standards governing building systems design: the thermal comfort standard that sets the acceptable range of temperature and humidity for occupants, the ventilation and indoor air quality standard that sets the rate of fresh air per person, and the building energy efficiency standard. Building codes around the world reference them, the Saudi Building Code among them. Chairing a national chapter is volunteer work at its core: organising technical sessions, professional development programmes and student branches, and carrying what is new in the standards to practising engineers before it becomes mandatory on projects.
