Marco Caversaccio

Chairman, University Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery

Marco Caversaccio is professor and chairman of the University Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, and the University of Bern. His group developed a miniaturised image-guided robotic system with five axes of movement and an integrated drill for minimally invasive access to the cochlea. He was senior author of the first-in-human study of robot-assisted cochlear implantation, published in Science Robotics in March 2017, in which a tunnel of about 2.5 mm is drilled from behind the ear to the cochlea using computer-assisted planning, stereotactic image guidance, tissue-property assessment and multipolar neuro-monitoring. He has continued to publish on robotic cochlear implantation workflows.
