Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer

Osama Alswailem is Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, after serving as its Chief Information Officer for over a decade. His fields are medical informatics, information systems and operations, IT security, data analytics and machine learning, and in 2024 he received the Digital Leadership award from the Saudi Digital Government Authority. He obtained Arab Board Certification in Family Medicine in 1995, after an MBBS in 1991 and a Primary Healthcare Diploma in 1994 from King Saud University College of Medicine, then completed a master's degree in medical informatics and a post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University, followed by acceptance into Harvard Business School on a fast-track alternative to the Executive MBA. The Healthcare Information Technology Affairs department he led was designated the organisation's Strategic Partner in Innovation and Excellence, and under that designation the hospital became the first organisation outside North America to reach HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7, the fourth to win the HIMSS Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence, and the first globally to reach HIMSS AMAM Stage 6. He used the hospital's data to shift the care delivery model towards personalised medicine and machine learning through the Center of Healthcare Intelligence, which leadership used extensively for COVID-19 predictive operational models before it turned to applied artificial intelligence in healthcare. With three decades in medical informatics, he teaches as Assistant Professor of Medical Informatics at Alfaisal University, sits on the board of King Faisal Specialist Hospital International Holding and on the Scientific Committee of the National Centre of Health Information under the Saudi Health Council, and is an active member of HIMSS and CHIME. He co-authored the book Developing Data Warehouse for the Healthcare Enterprise: Lessons from the Trenches, named Book of the Year for three years.
