Jean Gotman

Professor Emeritus, Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery

Jean Gotman is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University and the Montreal Neurological Institute. He holds an engineering degree from the University of Paris, a master's degree in computer science from Dartmouth College and a PhD in neuroscience from McGill University. He pioneered the automatic detection of spikes and seizures in long-term EEG recordings of people with epilepsy, and in 1986 founded Stellate, a company that supplied EEG, long-term epilepsy monitoring and polysomnography systems worldwide. His laboratory studies how epileptic discharges arise on the EEG, combining simultaneous EEG and functional MRI to identify the brain regions active during a discharge, and analyses high-frequency oscillations to help localise the epileptogenic zone. He has received the Research Recognition Award of the American Epilepsy Society, the Pierre Gloor Award of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, the Penfield Award of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy and the Ambassador for Epilepsy designation of the International League Against Epilepsy. He has published well over 290 peer-reviewed papers and mentored more than 100 graduate students and fellows.
