Dr. Athena Michaelidou

Minister of Education, Sport and Youth

Dr. Athena Michaelidou has served as Minister of Education, Sport and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus since March 2023, leading national policy across general and higher education, youth sport, and youth empowerment. She is anchoring educational reforms and aligning them with European competitiveness goals and the demands of digital and sustainable skills within the Cypriot and broader Mediterranean economy. Before assuming the ministerial portfolio, Dr. Michaelidou was Director of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, the official body responsible for the professional development of teachers and educational research in Cyprus. From this role she moved to serve as Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth and, in 2022, of the newly established Deputy Ministry of Culture. She represented Cyprus in several European Commission working groups and previously worked as a public-school teacher and pedagogy lecturer, coordinating numerous horizontal initiatives in educational innovation, action research, and educational policy. Dr. Michaelidou trained at the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus and holds a Bachelor's degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, a Master's in education from the University of Manchester, and a PhD in educational studies from the University of London, specialising in educational research and evaluation. She has collaborated academically with the Open University of Cyprus and the University of London. Her research focuses on teacher professional development and the introduction of innovations in educational systems, and she is regarded as a leading expert in educational policy in the Eastern Mediterranean.
