Associate Partner
Tobias Winkelmann is an Associate Partner at Herzog & de Meuron, the Basel architecture office founded in 1978 whose sports buildings include the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Beijing National Stadium built for the 2008 Olympic Games. The office approaches a stadium as a piece of city rather than a standalone container, which puts facade, material and public space at the centre of the design argument alongside the seating bowl itself. The Allianz Arena itself became the reference for an illuminated stadium facade that changes with the home side, an idea since taken up by many other grounds.
