Sally Carter
High School Drama Teacher
Sally Carter is the high school drama teacher at the American School of Doha, whose path into education was shaped by a drama teacher who became her mentor and sparked a lifelong love of theatre. She earned Qualified Teacher Status in the United Kingdom, a bachelor’s degree in theatre and modern history and a Bachelor of Secondary Education from Sydney. Her international teaching has taken her from Thailand and China to Abu Dhabi and Doha, teaching IB DP Theatre, DP Literature and Theory of Knowledge. Having taken the IB Diploma herself, she believes skills can be taught but learning happens through experience, and her approach centres on experiential, real-world learning in which students act, reflect and grow through the process. This shapes her commitment to inclusive curriculum design that creates pathways into theatre for students who do not yet see themselves as theatre people; at her previous school this approach raised student engagement in theatre from zero to 60 percent within twelve months.
