Dr Abdulsalam Al-Wayel is Associate Professor of Sociology at King Saud University in Riyadh, and a researcher and writer on social structure in the Kingdom and its transformations. His work addresses the relationship between religion, society and the state, the shift in values and social roles that accompanies development programmes, and its effect on the family and the public sphere. He writes in the cultural and intellectual press and takes part in public debate, combining sociological theory with close observation of Saudi phenomena in their local context.
