A food security session held on Wednesday as part of the Saudi Industry Forum 2026 in Jeddah examined ways to strengthen the sustainability of grain supplies and the resilience of related supply chains, while also addressing efficiency gains across the Kingdom's milling sector to support the national food security ecosystem and its capacity to absorb geopolitical and climatic shifts, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The session reviewed the Kingdom's strategic grain storage system and the role played by the National Grain Supply Company (SABIL), in coordination with milling companies, in maintaining continuity of supply, noting a target of keeping a strategic wheat reserve sufficient for approximately six months and exceeding 2.5 million tons, alongside diversifying supply sources and drawing on both local production and Saudi agricultural investments abroad.
Participants said the readiness of the system, combined with varied import and transportation channels, helped keep supply stable during global trade disruptions, an outcome they attributed to proactive crisis management plans, continuous inventory monitoring and closer coordination between the relevant authorities and milling companies.
They also stressed the importance of sustained integration between government entities and milling companies, improved digital connectivity of inventory data, diversified maritime routes, import gateways and supply sources, and stronger cybersecurity readiness at automated facilities, measures intended to reinforce supply chain resilience and the sustainability of food security in the Kingdom.
